Michael DeVinney is an economics and private property expert, author, and analyst whose work advances a unified philosophical framework that integrates natural law, human action, and order to explain the foundations of society. He writes from the conviction that every just form of law, economics, and politics must arise from the nature of man, not from legislative decree.
In August 2014, his life changed dramatically when he suffered a stroke caused by an arterial dissection—an event compounded by hydrocephalus that required a craniotomy (brain surgery) and resulted in the loss of half his cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls coordination. Years later, in May 2021, he underwent a second craniotomy to remove a brain tumor in the remaining half of his cerebellum. The stroke initially left him unable to walk or speak, and recovery required years of persistence and discipline. He continues to recover from the tumor removal. Though he faces lasting effects, including limits on how long he can type at one time, he has transformed that adversity into focus and purpose.
Out of that period of recovery and reflection came his first full-length book, Pure Political Philosophy: Natural Law and Sulaocracy—a synthesis of philosophy and economics that seeks to restore the unity between truth, law, and freedom. The term Sulaocracy, coined by Michael himself, derives from the Greek sulao (“to plunder”) and kratos (“rule”), describing a system in which the state sustains itself by expropriation. A companion work, Lex Naturalis, distills those principles into applied jurisprudence.
Across hundreds of essays and aphorisms, Michael extends these ideas into ethics, psychology, and theology—showing how the logic of human action and the moral order are inseparable. His central theme is constant:
Freedom, law, and truth form an indivisible triad. When law departs from truth, justice becomes coercion; when truth guides law, freedom endures.
His intellectual influences include Ludwig von Mises, Murray Rothbard, Hans-Hermann Hoppe, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Thomas Sowell.
