Corporations are often cited as an argument against capitalism. This is misleading—at best. It might even be said by people who have something to gain. It could very well be a lie, not a misleading statement. Modern corporations are in bed with the state. To call this capitalism is just repeating propaganda. Ask yourself: who benefits? Do this before you repeat something you hear. You might come to a different conclusion.
A corporation could just be individuals organizing to earn income in a certain way. There’s almost no aspect of life that’s unregulated. If thoughts are regulated, you better believe corporations aren’t left alone. They bribe the state to get preferential policies. To make it sound legitimate, it’s called “lobbying.” Your choices have been reduced, prices must rise. This is statism. It’s not capitalism.
A business may have some qualms about doing this. Well, if they decide to not bribe to get preferential policies, they’ll be the victim. The saying: if you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu; is very appropriate. Basically, you better bribe or you’ll be harmed. This is clearly extortion. So, all businesses are coerced into bribing. Once that happens, it comes down to who has the biggest bribe. Bigger companies can afford bigger bribes.
Benito Mussolini was accurate when he said, “Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power.” A business doesn’t have any power if the marriage doesn’t exist. They must provide you with goods you want. It’s a voluntary transaction. The business isn’t coercing you into buying anything. A business convinces, the state compels.
Monopoly prices only exist when there is a marriage. Otherwise, it would just be the free market price. Many modern businesses are heavily involved with the state. They get extorted if they chose not to get in bed. It boils down to who has the biggest bribe. Bigger businesses can afford a much bigger bribe. It’s likely they’ll get preferential policies, and their competitors will suffer. Statism is the cause of misery.
