What Population Problem?

There is no such thing as overpopulation.  Population has never been a problem.  It’s certainly not something humans should work towards “solving.”  Invariably, politicians can take more money and have more power to address a non-existent problem.  Population is checked by how much humans can produce.  This is checked without any political intervention.  Humans can produce at the maximum efficiency if private property is respected.

It’s taken for granted that we have goods available.  This was not always the case.  It takes a lower level of time preference.  Crusoe must save fish that he caught with his hands to construct a net.  The net would never come into existence if he had a higher time preference.  His survival would be checked by how much he could produce.  He may not last very long from catching fish with his hands.  He would last even less time if Friday robbed him in perpetuity.

Crusoe has few natural weapons so he must save to survive.  He won’t be able to catch fish as efficiently as other animals without tools.  He must develop capital goods and work with the others stranded with him.  They must save what they produce and make tools which would make survival easier.  If not, the population of the island will be checked by what they produce, always.  The population of the island is never a problem.

It becomes a problem if Friday decides to rob Crusoe in perpetuity.  Not the population in general, but the parasites in society make it more difficult to survive.  What is produced is a natural constraint.  Parasites are an artificial constraint.  Population and well-being are inhibited by artificial constraints.  Survival will be more difficult depending on how exploitative Friday is.  Now, expand the example.

Population is never a problem.  The number of parasites in society is the problem.  Your well-being is hindered when you’re being robbed in perpetuity.  There’s no way around that.  It’s impossible for you to be better off.  Don’t be fooled by catchwords and slogans.  Malthus explained population over 200 years ago.  Yet, this nonsense is still pushed today.  Producing and savings leads to growth, not a growing number of parasites.
